Work permits (EAD): the basics

October 19, 2026 · 1 min read · Vista Immigrant Support

An Employment Authorization Document (EAD), often called a work permit, is a card issued by USCIS that shows you are allowed to work in the United States. You apply for it on Form I-765.

Who can apply?

Eligibility depends on your immigration situation. People in several different situations may be able to apply, for example people with a pending asylum application, a pending green card application, or certain temporary protections. A work permit is requested under a specific category, so the right category matters.

Common mistakes

  • Applying under the wrong category
  • Missing supporting documents or photos
  • Waiting until the card is about to expire to renew
  • Moving and not updating your address with USCIS

Plan your renewal

Processing times change and can be long. USCIS generally lets you request a renewal well before the expiration date, so mark the date on your calendar early. Whether you can keep working while a renewal is pending depends on your category and the rules at the time.
