Master Calendar Hearings

The short first hearings where the judge sets the course of your case.

A master calendar hearing is usually the first appearance in immigration court. Many people have hearings on the same day and each one is short. The judge confirms who you are, explains your rights, asks whether you agree with the allegations and charges in the Notice to Appear, and discusses whether you will ask for any form of relief.

What happens here shapes the rest of your case, so it helps to arrive prepared. Our attorney can appear with you for matters she accepts.

Who this is for

  • People with a first or follow-up date on the immigration court calendar
  • People who need an interpreter at court
  • Families who want to know what the day will look like

What to expect

Arrive early, expect security screening, and wait until your name is called. The judge may set deadlines to file applications or schedule an individual hearing. You can ask the court for an interpreter in advance; the court provides one at no cost.

What to bring

  • Your hearing notice and the Notice to Appear
  • Government-issued ID
  • Any applications or documents you plan to file
  • A pen and paper to write down dates
